Instruction for AP#1: Place posters, letters, photos at stations around classroom. Model analyzing a document. Collaborative pairs rotate from station to station analyzing other documents and completing matrix organizer to tell how a variety of jobs and Americans helped with the war effort. Fill in the first two sections of the matrix graphic organizer.

AP#1: Choose a job from one of the stations/documents and write a job description or want ad for it OR have students “tell their story” from the assigned job role perspective.

Instruction for AP#2: Watch video clips “Victory Gardens Lead to Victory” (3 min.) and “We All do Our Part” (school volunteer efforts and scrap drives) (4 min) Discuss after each video segment and fill in the Home and School Volunteers section of the matrix, first with a partner and then with the group.

AP#2:Complete a RAFT: R(ole) School age child or housewife A(udience) Dad in the European or Pacific Theater F(ormat) Letter T(opic) how we’re helping out

Instruction for AP#3: Have pairs read segments from either Foster’s War or A Fence Away from Freedomand answer questions on a reading guide. Discuss Japanese internment and its effects on Japanese Americans and on all Americans based on the reading. Class discussion with pairs sharing then complete section on matrix.

AP#3:Take a position: Was Japanese internment right or wrong? Why? Write a letter to the editor or have partners write a set of interview questions and take turns being the interviewer asking the guest expert questions.

Assignment: Compare and contrast reactions of Americans/impacts after Pearl Harbor and after 9/11.
